Distance: 4/5 miles
This walk from the Castlerock seafront takes us into the eccentric Earl Bishop’s “lost” demesne at Downhill, past various follies to the Mussenden Temple perched dramatically on the edge of the cliffs above Downhill beach. From the temple, there are extensive views east to Portrush and west to the Inishown Peninsula. Walking inland from the temple we will soon reach the ruined Downhill Palace and from there past the ha ha to have lunch in the shelter of the walled garden.
From the demesne, we will walk downhill to Downhill village and the beach returning to Castlerock via the Bishops fish ponds and the remnants of an extensive pleasure ground. This walk is largely on the level and is on paths and public roads.
