Calendar of Events

Please note: The time displayed in the summary of each event (usually 10:30) is the time we meet at the initial meeting point (usually Dunbar Link car park) and NOT the time the group will be at the starting point of the walk. Please read the walk description for full details.

Cavehill to Divis, Belfast Hills
Dec 10 @ 10:15 – 15:15

We leave Exchange/Corporation Street car park at 10.15am by car and we will start walking from the front door of Belfast Castle at 10.45am. sharp. This is close to the shortest day in the year!

The walk takes us in a southerly direction through Cavehill Country Park to reach the Hightown Road. We walk on the green verge down the Hightown Road to the horseshoe bend on the Crumlin Road. There we can stop to admire or poke fun at the latest in arty Belfast –…/new-public-sculpture-celebrates……/…/origin-belfast-a-conceptu…/

We walk up the Crumlin Road on a footpath for a short distance to reach Ligoniel Country Park. We walk through the park, cross the village and exit via the parks around the old mill dams on the south side of the village. We can take a look at where the new pedestrian bridge for walkers which will eventually cross the Forth River will be located before fording the river (I’ll put my cloak down for those in pumps) to reach Glencairn. At Glencairn we climb up through an old British Army fort (no, the squaddies are all long gone) from the 1970s to reach Divis Mountain and eventually the coffee shop. At the coffee shop we will ring for taxis from Gransha Taxis at 028 9060 2092 (go on put it in your mobile phone now) in order to get back across the city to Belfast Castle again. Estimated walking time is four to four and a half hours so we will be leaving the castle at 10.45am sharp. There will be no charge for the petrol money to Belfast Castle but each walker will have to share in the cost of the taxi, estimated at around £4.00 a head.
